Galactorrhea

Galactorrhea is characterized by uncommon milk discharge through nipples. It is not related to normal milk discharge in post delivery nursing days. Women who never had children may show this sign after menopause. However, it can also occur in infants and men as well. It is usually attributed to over-secretion of hormone prolactin which stimulates milk production.

It can occur on account of excessive breast stimulation, tumor, kidney disease, nerve damage, endocrinal malfunctioning or side effects of certain medications. Mammography, MRI, blood test are performed to confirm the diagnosis. Galactorrhea, often goes away itself, but sometimes, can indicate underlying disorder.
